FEDS FEED FAMILIES

June 1 – August 27, 2014

THE DRIVE

Feds Feed Families is an annual government-wide food drive campaign.  The effort is led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. Department of Defense.  All local Federal employees and military members are asked to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore by collecting food items from June 1 – August 27.

THE NEED

The Foodbank serves children, seniors and adults struggling with hunger in the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin, and Virginia Beach as well as the counties of Southampton, Northampton, Sussex, Isle of Wight and Accomack.  During the summer months, food donations drop severely.  The need increases for families with children who are out of school and can no longer rely on the breakfast and lunch that they normally receive through the free and reduced meal programs.  Federal employees can help by collecting the following most-needed items:

Protein, Meat and Fish

peanut butter, tuna, canned ham, canned chicken, beans

Fruits and Vegetables

canned fruits and vegetables, 100% fruit juice, instant potatoes,   fruit preserves, dried fruit

Grains

cereal, oatmeal, rice, whole grain crackers

Complete Meals

pasta and sauce, boxed meals, chunky soups, stews

Baby Products

powdered formula, baby food, diapers, wipes
